Don’t believe the hype. Speculation on coverage assignments is often just plain wrong. We don’t guess here at PFF. Each week, I dig through the actual coverage tendencies for all 32 NFL teams and compile this information in the WR/CB Matchup Chart, which is released on Thursday mornings.
Remember, the chart only contains data from the present season. For those who would like to do historic research on coverage responsibilities, I suggest checking out the 2015 Coverage Data Chart. We also released a new feature this week, the Shadow Coverage Matrix, which breaks down every shadow coverage situation for every team throughout the season.
Week 4 matchup upgrades
Steve Smith and Mike Wallace vs. Oakland — Tennessee didn’t do much against the Raiders secondary in Week 3, but the Ravens offense presents a much tougher matchup. Both Wallace and Smith have big-play skillsets, which is exactly what Oakland has struggled against so far this season. Both players move up into the WR3 conversation with Wallace likely to see a lot of Sean Smith, and Steve Smith getting an advantage when he lines up in the slot against D.J. Hayden.
Travis Benjamin and Tyrell Williams vs. New Orleans — You know that percolator song? That’s what goes through my head any time I think about this matchup. Both Benjamin and Williams get upgrades this week against New Orleans. We expect Ken Crawley to shadow Benjamin and Williams to draw shadow coverage from Sterling Moore. Crawley has seen a target on 26 percent of his covered routes, and Moore has been targeted on 23 percent of his routes. That means good things for the Chargers duo. Fire them up with confidence in all formats.
